Dolphins at Sunset.

An unexpected delight of a sunset cruise while on holidays in the Maldives — a pod of dolphins putting on a show for us.

Somehow these amazing creatures still have the energy to frolic and leap for pure fun as darkness falls.

Spinner dolphins are the most common kind in the waters here. They have a pale stripe down the body, and different shaped snout to the bottle nose dolphin, which is also seen in this area. (I see bottle-nosed dolphins a lot at home, and these were quite different.)

Whatever the species, watching them was a sheer delight. Our captain simply let the boat idle near them until darkness threatened to overtake us and it was time to head for shore.

This was, of course, outside the reef which protects the island. I’m not sure if they come within the shallows beyond the reef, although I did spy them playing with the surfers riding the famous left hand break on the far side of the island. (The restaurant there also did a great pizza.)

I’m not sure why these animals speak to me so, but whenever I see them, I feel truely grateful, as I’m offered a glimpse into another side of this world.
