Sunset in Florence
Memories are strange things. Proust wrote of how a smell transported him to the past. Photographs do the same for me. Not just the memory of when I took the photo, but also
of when I have visited the place before, with the layers of memories sliding over one another.
This photos was taken from the Oltrarno, the ‘other side of the Arno’. Unfashionable until the Medici bought the Pitti Palace, the quiet back streets are still filled with artisan workshops, and secluded villas retain a medieval air.

Sunset anywhere in Tuscany is magical. In Florence the colours are divine. I wish I knew what it is about the air which makes sunsets simply shimmer. They boast different tones to those of Rome, and are definitely a different colour to those of my Australian home.

Then there are the Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile, the classic sights of Florence, readying themselves for sleep are a hard day entertaining tourists. I can only guess at their dreams.
