Headless in Bamberg

Bamberg is a gorgeous medieval city which, being built on seven hills overlooking a river, has often been compared to Rome.
Of all the city’s wonders, however, I didn’t expect to find a headless statue in the cathedral. Perhaps it’s St. Denis, (although he was a French martyr who picked up his decapitated caput and walked to what is now Montmartre, Paris before collapsing).
Still, he doesn’t look too dissatisfied with his lot.

The Farnese Hercules is a classic masterpiece in Naples’ Archeological Museum. A Roman copy of a bronze Greek statue created by in the 4th C BC, the statue depicts a weary Hercules leaning on his club, over which is draped the skin of the Nemean Lion. Behind his back Hercules holds the Apples of Hesperides, and so both the first and last of his twelve labours are represented.
